Third post in our series of 4 is: How to perform the perfect push ups. This post is a bit tricky I got to admit, because a perfect push up for you is not the perfect push up for me. Most people do their push ups slightly different then someone else. Some like to do quick push ups instead of slow ones. Some like to do wide push ups instead of small pushups and others like to do short
Speed: The speed which you are doing your push ups with is a huge factor in the effectiveness of your push ups. Doing slow push ups will burn more energy than fast push ups. You can give this a try. First try 5 fast push ups and then 5 slow push ups. You’ll notice that the slow push ups are a lot harder as you’ll be needing a constant flow of energy to perform this push up. Whereas with the fast push ups, it’s just a burst of energy which elevates you in the air. This doesn’t necessarily mean that fast push ups are bad. Fast push ups have their own benefits, but that’s something be writing about another time. So how can you tell how fast you should do your push ups to be perfect push ups?
Position: Another thing to keep in mind for “the perfect push ups” is your stance. How far apart are your feet? Having your feet further apart from each other will make the exercise easier as it gives you more balance. But the closer they are they harder the push ups get. So it’s all up to you. Just like your feet, it’s important to keep an eye out for your hands. How far apart are they? As described in the differences in push ups, it gets harder as your hands get closer to each other. The closest possible is the diamond push up, where your hands touch each other. So how can you tell how far apart your hands should be for the perfect push ups?
Strokes: How far do you go down when doing your push ups? How far should you go down? It depends on you. Do you go down all the way and let your belly hit the floor or do you go down till you’re like 10-15cm from the floor? The answers to these questions are different per person. If you go down all the way to the floor, you’ll have a harder time getting up. And this is where you’ll burn most of your energy and this is where you make the big difference. People that are not used to push ups yet, should be the ones that go down till like 10-15cm from the floor, because these are not as hard as the ones where you go down all the way. So how can you tell how far you have to go down to perform the perfect push ups?
As you can see, the answer to the questions is you can’t. You can’t tell how fast you should be doing your push up for the perfect push ups. You can’t tell what position you should be in for the perfect push ups. And you can’t tell how long or short your strokes should be for the perfect push ups.
Instead of 1 question for everyone, there should a list of questions which you need to answer to get an answer to “how to perform the perfect push ups”. And by answering the questions on that list, you should be able to find out what the perfect push ups are for YOU and how to perform them.
1-4: What are push ups and doing your first push ups
