A Japanese Wii Fit BoxRemember the old days when Mario was the next best thing after sliced bread? The days when you jumped all over the place while you were jumping in the game. These days will be coming back thanks to the Wii Fit by Nintendo. Well, you won’t be jumping all over the place, but you will be burning calories in the comfort of your own house and you will get fitter by playing “video games”.

The recent launch of the Wii Fit could not have escaped you, or the buzz around it. This made me want to write a post about it and today is the lucky day. This post will highlight some of the health benefits of Nintendo’s Wii Fit.

To start off with, the 40 activities on the Wii Fit can be divided in 4 groups. Those groups are:

  • Muscle conditioning
  • Yoga poses
  • Aerobics exercises
  • Balance games

These 4 groups will work out most of your body. Because I don’t have a Wii Fit I couldn’t tell you which games, poses or exercises there are. But with you having a choice between 40 activities I’m sure that some of these will fit you.

I mean, it’s nice to know what games and exercises the Wii Fit offers, but that’s not really the points of this post, so to cut to the chase, let me sum up some of the health benefits of the Wii Fit.

Improved lung capacity: Because of the aerobic exercises, your lung capacity will improve. You will have an easier time breathing normally and your everyday activities will be easier to perform.

Muscle gain: The muscle conditioning group will cause your muscles to grow. While you grow muscles, you will look better, feel better and have a higher metabolism which will cause you to burn more calories.

Flexible muscles: The yoga exercises will make your muscles more flexible. You will be able to stretch your muscles in ways you normally could not. Having flexible muscles will also reduce the risk of you getting an injury.

Improved balance: By playing the balance games you will improve you balance over time. Having a better balance can prevent certain injuries as you will stand in a more natural position.

I could break down these 4 health benefits of the Wii Fit into smaller benefits, but I think knowing the main benefits would be enough for you to decide whether you should be either buying a Wii Fit, or using it more often if you have 1 already.
