Sport

A row of dumbbels in a gym *Drum Roll* And today’s questions is; Should I do a cardio or a weight training workout. Now that the average weight of people is going up with no end in sight, more and more people are getting aware of the risks of being overweight. If you are overweight, and you are wondering whether you should be doing cardiovascular exercises or weight training exercises to get rid of them extra pounds. I got the answer for you, or should I say, you got the answer to your own question.

It’s actually quite easy to find out whether you should be doing a cardio or weight training working. Answer these questions for yourself.

  1. Do I want to lose weight?
  2. Do I like doing cardiovascular exercises aka running for hours?
  3. Do I like throwing around weights?

Since you are reading this post, the answer to question 1 is kind of obvious. Yes you want to lose some extra pounds. The answer to question 2 and 3 differ from person to person. Some people like running and others like to throw around some weights. But there is one thing that you should keep in mind. No matter which one of the workouts you like, you should be doing both.

Now that you know whether you like to run or to throw around some weights, it’s time for the next questions. By answering these questions you’ll find out the ratio between your cardio and weight training workouts.

  1. Do I want to gain muscle, or leave my muscle level at it is?
  2. Do I want to improve my cardiovascular condition?

Okay, 2 more easy questions for you. After answering these it will be clearer for you whether you should be focusing on cardio or weight training exercises. If your answer to the first question is yes, then you should be doing more weight training workouts then cardio workouts. If you answer to the first question is no, then you should be focusing on cardio exercises. The maximum amount of workouts, whether it is cardio or weight training, is 6. Don’t go over this number as it will reduce the time you have to recover drastically.

Generally, doing 1 or 2 cardio sessions per week should be enough to keep your cardiovascular conditioning and your body fat gains at the same level. Doing 1 or 2 cardio sessions per week won’t hind hinder muscle growth either. Besides doing the 1 or 2 cardio sessions per week, you should be doing weight training workouts at least 3 times a week.

Do you want to know the benefits of doing cardio or weight training workouts? Well, stay tuned, because those will come soon.

Update: As promised I wrote an article about 10 benefits of cardiovascular exercises and an article about 10 benefits of weight training exercises.
