What is metabolismWhether you want to lose weight, or you’re just interested in human health. Metabolism is something you just need to know about. You can see metabolism as a network of hormones and enzymes that convert food into fuel and also affect how efficiently burn that fuel. You can also look at metabolism as a mechanism that burns your calories thus determining how quickly you gain or lose weight.

Always wondered why your friend never gained any weight after eating all that junk? And when you eat the same stuff, you can see the pounds flying on your body. Well, that’s because not everyone burns calories at the same rate. The rate of which you burn calories with is determined by many things.

  • Age: Your metabolism will naturally slow down when you’re near the age of 40. Every decade or so, your metabolism will slow down by about 5%. Young people tend to have a higher metabolism then older people.
  • Gender: When you want a high metabolism it helps to be a man. Men generally burn more calories than woman.
  • Muscle: Muscular people tend to have a higher metabolism. This is because muscle is the engine for your metabolism. The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn.
  • Hydration: over 70% of bodily functions take place in water, not drinking enough water will cause all your systems to slow down, which includes your metabolism
  • Genetics: There are people that are born with a higher metabolism, this cannot be influenced by anything. But don’t forget that even with a higher metabolism you can be overweight.

I think this list only mentions a few things that affect your metabolism. But as you can see there are quite a few things you can do to change your metabolism. It is vital to know that if you want to lose weight, you need to raise your metabolism.

Now that you know what metabolism is and what it does, I hope it helps you with your journey to lose weight.
