It’s time for the 4th post in the “MrX said” post series. In this series I will write a post which’s basis is a comment from a reader. In return for the great comment I’ll link back to the blog of the reader who left the comment, which one day will hopefully help him or her out. And that’s what the “MrX said” series is about, making some of the readers famous.
This week we got a comment from Nico of Prohealthblog, is his comment he said the following:
Problem with restaurants and food ingredient transparency often is that they might just not want to give away their recipe
Yet mentioning the calories shouldn’t be much of a big deal. 3600 calories is an insane amount, just for a pizza…
This was actually a reply to another “MrX said” post, which is about “know what you are eating”. I could write the same thing again, which will make it less interesting for you. So, to make it more interesting I wanted to mix this post with a search query which found its way to this blog. The person typed “should fast food restaurants be taken away” and landed on this blog. I was a bit surprised at first, but when I saw he or she landed on the “think twice before you eat fast food” post, it made a lot more sense.
Both the comment and the search query show that there is a bit of vagueness around fast food restaurants. People don’t know what’s in the food, how (un)healthy the food actually is and what the food does to your body. 3600 calories for a pizza is over the top, just by looking at the pizza you could get a stroke, that’s how bad that pizza is for you.
This vagueness has been noticed by The New York City Board of Health and they started to force restaurants to show the calories on their menus, but do you think this will be enough? They are only forcing the big restaurants, but what happens to the smaller ones, which could be as bad or even worse than the big ones. It is of course hard, if not impossible to force every restaurant to show the calories on their menus, but it is worth investing time and money in.
Thank you Nico of Prohealthblog for you thoughtful comment, I hope to see many more of them.
And as for the topic itself: Do you think that fast food restaurants are so bad, that they should be taken away?
