Big Red Tomatoes (And some Yellow)Just yesterday, both Reuters and CNN have reported that there has been a salmonella outbreak in the Southwestern U.S. The source? Raw tomatoes. Not your every day tomatoes, but large tomatoes, including Roma and red round tomatoes. Of the 40 people that were infected, 38 were interviewed. The majority of them said they have eaten raw tomatoes.

The story itself is quite shocking, but why’d I make a post about it? Just to make you aware of the fact that there is infected food circulating and not everything you eat is guaranteed to be healthy. If you don’t know the food you’re buying or eating, always be careful. If possible try to avoid unknown food.

In the Netherlands there is a saying: The farmer doesn’t eat what he doesn’t know. The idea behind it is simple. He doesn’t want to change, just to be safe. If you are tired of eating the same old food over and over, don’t just eat the next best thing that crosses your path. Ask your friends and family for ideas, recipes, stores at which you can buy food, restaurants and snack bars at which you can eat.

Next time, before you go on an adventure, ask advice first. Don’t eat food which you don’t know and definitely don’t eat big red suspicious tomatoes.
