African child drinking waterIn the post “7 health benefits of drinking water” it’s all about the benefits of drinking water. But as you might know from experience, it’s too easy to forget to keep drinking water. With this post I’d to give you some tips that can help you to remember to drink water. I’ve read some of these on other sites and they have worked fine for me and I hope they will work for you as well.

In the morning: After a long sleep, your body will be dehydrated. To get rid of this, the first thing in the morning you should be doing is getting a glass of water.

When you hit the sack: When you’re about to sleep, drink a glass of water. Doing this will give you a less thirsty feeling in the morning

Before-during-after meals: Try to drink a glass of water before you start to eat. It’s said that this will give you a fuller feeling, so you’ll eat less, but I doubt it. Drinking a glass of water during your meal will help you digest your food better and makes it a bit easier for your stomach. And you should be drinking a glass of water after you’re done eating, just to hit your daily quota.

Carry a bottle with you: If you’re going somewhere it’s useful to bring a bottle of water with you. It doesn’t have to be a 2 liter bottle. A small bottle will do, so you can take a sip once a while.

A glass on your desk: If you’re like me and like to sit behind the desk a lot, I suggest you get used to having a glass of water on your desk at all times. This way you’ll constantly have something to drink and when you’re glass is empty, you’ll have to stand up, which you get your heart working again.

Before-during-after exercise: Just like the meals, it’s recommended you drink water before you exercise. The fluids you lose during your exercise need to be replenished, so don’t forget to drink during your exercises. And of course after your exercises, just drink a glass or bottle of water for the sake of it.

Cold water: It’s more pleasant to drink your water cold. To get cold water, you can throw a couple of ice cubes in it. Or put your bottle in the freezer before you drink it. Drinking your water cold will help you get used to drinking water quicker as it’s more pleasant to drink.

Lemon water: Don’t like to drink “just” water? Well, how about you throw a slice of lemon it in or a bit of lemon juice. Just like the cold water, if it’s more pleasant for you it’ll help you to get used to drinking water more often.

Substitute other beverages: If you’re used to drinking tea, coffee or any other beverages, try water instead. Of course it’s hard to not drink coffee or tea at all, but try to keep it to a minimum. It’s for your own health after all.

Get used to timing it: It’s easier to keep drinking water if you are reminded to drink it. Try to get a watch with a little beep every hour or so, so you know it’s time for you to get a glass of water. If you’re behind your desk, there are plenty of programs that can help you with this.

Keep track of it: It’s a lot easier for you if you keep track of your water drinking. Try to write it down on a paper or something similar to it. For every glass you drink, jot something down so it’s visible to you. It’s a useful way to see what you’ve drank and what you still need to drink for the day.

I think I’ve tried 8 of the tips I just mentioned and it works wonder I got to tell you. Without doing anything special but drinking plenty of water, I’ve lost 1 kilo in the last 3 days. Do you have any tips that can help you get used to drinking water?

Yet the media keeps reporting that there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that drinking lots of water is a good thing.

Drinking “lots” might not be a good idea. Usually, lots of anything isn’t a good idea. Just try to drink about 2 liters a day.
