Why Walking To Lose Weight May Be Safer Than Running

When people consider adding exercise to their lives for the purpose of losing weight, running is often one of the first exercises considered. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, for many, running may be the best exercise to begin with and then add others as they progress. There are, however, a few people for whom running may not be a good idea. For these individuals, walking to lose weight may be safer than running.

Some people are excessively overweight. This condition is known as obesity and carries with it many chronic health problems. If a person is too heavy, running can lead to injuries, including stress fractures and joint injuries because the body simply can not take the strain and the impact of running.

Breathing is also a serious issue for many of these people because they have so much fat built up in their bodies that their lung capacity is limited. Lack of proper oxygenation of the blood can lead to muscle failure and lactose fermentation that causes incredible soreness. There is also the chance that one can get out of breath and pass out while trying to run which could result in serious injury.

For these people, walking may prove to be a safer alternative. Walking is not as stressful on the body because it is a lower impact form of exercise. This puts less strain on the joints and bones, reducing the risk of injury. It is also slower, requiring less energy output from the muscles, meaning there is a lower need of oxygen and less chance of getting completely out of breath.

Walking to lose weight makes a good starting point for these individuals, who can then progress to running as they begin to lose weight and build up their endurance. It allows the muscles to become stronger and the lung capacity to increase as fat is lost before putting the body under the strain of trying to run. It also allows for a lower impact workout that has less chance of resulting in an injury that could bring all exercise to a halt while one waits to heal.

While there are other exercise programs available to help one lose weight, walking to lose weight is something that can be done anywhere, any time. One can set a goal to walk a certain distance today and increase that distance after a few days. Increasing speed is also possible and will happen naturally as the body becomes both lighter and stronger.
