Breakfast

Big Fat Exclamation Mark“Never work before breakfast. If you have to work before breakfast, get your breakfast first.” Josh Billings (American Humorist, 1818-1885)

In this post I’ll tell you why breakfast is important. As you all know, the breakfast is the first out of the main three meals.

And because it’s the first meal, it’s also the most important one. Not having breakfast can cause serious problems.

There have been lots of studies about breakfast, and one of the studies showed that about 25% of the population of the western countries (West-Europe and the United States) skip the breakfast. There are couple reasons why people skip breakfast in the morning. And some of the reasons are; not enough time, not enough food in the house or by skipping the breakfast, they think they consume less calories.

To have the “perfect” breakfast, you should consider a couple of things. One of them is, your breakfast should contain about 1/3 of your daily needs. Which means, for an average male, it should be about 830 calories (2500/3) and for an average female it should be about 660 calories (2000/3)

Another thing you should consider is the food you eat during the breakfast. Your breakfast should contain a bit of fat, this could be cheese or margarine on your bread. The reason for this is that after 8 to 12 hours of not eating, the bile is thickening, and by eating a bit of fat, this will be stopped.

Even though it could be annoying to have breakfast every day, there are a couple of thing you could do to get used to having breakfast in the morning.

  • You can plan ahead, and make a list of what you could have for breakfast, so that when you wake up, you won’t be thinking about what you should be eating.
  • You can set the alarm clock like 15 minutes earlier, so you have some spare time to make and eat your breakfast. This would also mean that you should be going to bed a bit earlier.
  • If it’s really that hard for you to eat in the morning, you could also think about eating while you are going to work or school or where ever you are going.
  • And last but not least, if all of the above it not working for you, or you are just lazy enough not to do it all. You could also eat something at work or school, as long as it’s still early.

To get back to the problems I wrote earlier in my post. Here are 2 the problems that can be caused by skipping breakfast.

1. Dullness; by skipping breakfast, or having a breakfast which is too small, you can get a dull or tired feeling. This is caused by the low level of glucose in the blood. No breakfast, or a too small breakfast is also the main reason why your concentration level drops, which influences your working and learning abilities

2. Overweight; by skipping breakfast in the morning, you tend to eat more during the midday and evening. And especially eating more than needed in the evening can cause serious weight problems.
